Hotshot Equipment Checklist: Pro Kit

Hotshot success starts with a broker-friendly setup. We dispatch CDL-A hotshot carriers running 40’+ gooseneck or 35’+5’ (40’ preferred with mega ramps), with the ability to scale 17,000 lbs+ and current MC/Insurance.

Truck (1-ton dually)

Rated to haul — proper GVWR/GCWR for your typical payloads.
Brake controller + towing package — no “maybe it’ll pass” setups.
Fuel & reliability — higher range reduces wasted time chasing fuel.

Common: 3500/4500/5500-class dually with mirrors, controller, and proper hitch prep.

Trailer (35’+5’ or 40’+ gooseneck)

Length — Required: 35’+5’ or 40’ (40’ preferred).
Mega ramps preferred — better load options, fewer turn-downs.
Scale-ready — ability to scale 17,000 lbs+ of cargo.

Bonus: winch plate, solid D-rings, stake pockets, and good lighting reduce load issues.

Securement & tarping

WLL compliant — chains/straps that match the commodity and route.
Edge protection — prevents strap cuts & claim drama.
Tarp readiness — faster yes/no decisions on higher-paying loads.

We confirm securement expectations up front to avoid “surprise” instructions at pickup.

Compliance & operations

Valid Class A CDL — we don’t dispatch non-CDL hotshot.
Current MC/Insurance — and factor-ready paperwork flow.
Document control — fast POD uploads = faster pay.

Hotshot RPM Tips (How We Protect Your Margin)

We price the “real trip”

Hotshot profit is won in all-miles RPM. We consider your deadhead, fuel burn, tolls, loading time, and accessorial risk — then negotiate a rate that matches the actual work (not just the loaded miles).

What we document

  • Detention terms (when applicable) + clear appointment notes.
  • TONU / layover wording for cancel/reschedule scenarios.
  • Tarp pay when required (and tarping expectations in writing).
  • Pickup/delivery instructions to reduce surprises and wasted time.
👥 Best Fit
